Many Upper St. Clair residents may have greeted the morning of May 18 with a look outside and thoughts of — not again.

A light rain fell early, signaling what looked as if the weather would not cooperate for Upper St. Clair Community Day, which over the years has tended to be marred by precipitation more often than not.
By the time the 40th annual event got going in earnest, though, the rain had given way to a light cloud cover on the way to eventual sunshine.
And so the day’s activities went off without a hitch, including a kickoff ceremony featuring a salute to Armed Forces Day, celebrated throughout the nation Saturday. Two soon-to-be Upper St. Clair High School graduates spoke about their military pursuits, Alaina Serrapere as a U.S. Navy recruit and Brendan Neal as a U.S. Naval Academy student.
The annual parade followed along McLaughlin Run Road, featuring numerous municipal, scholastic and community groups, starting representatives of the Upper St. Clair Township Police Department and wrapping up with a procession of Upper St. Clair Volunteer Fire Department vehicles.
Those attending Community Day had the opportunity to visit booths featuring food and games, and to attend open houses at the fire department, nearby Gilfillan Farm and Clair’s Kennel, where South Hills Cooperative Animal Control uses this space to hold lost pets until their owners are found.
For folks who have an interest in history, the Civil War re-enactment Knap’s Battery was set up near the 1830 Log House at the foot of the Upper St. Clair High School property.
And for everyone, attending Community Day without having to bring an umbrella was a nice way to enjoy the proceedings.
