Mt. Lebanon receives state grant for traffic improvements

Mt. Lebanon is among the municipalities to receive Automated Red Light Enforcement funding from the state Department of Transportation.
Pennsylvania’s ARLE program aims to improve safety at signalized intersections by providing automated enforcement at locations where data shows the running of red lights has been an issue.
The $268,149 awarded to Mt. Lebanon is for construction of auxiliary right-turn lanes on the Segar Road approach to Bower Hill Road, next to St. Clair Hospital, and the Bower Hill Road approach to Washington Road, where mast arms will replace strain poles at the intersection.
The money also will be used to install new light-emitting diode pedestrian signal heads, emergency vehicle pre-emption, emergency generator panels and push buttons at various locations.
Under state law, ARLE grant funding is supplied by fines from red light violations at 30 intersections in Philadelphia. The law specifies projects improving safety, enhancing mobility and reducing congestion can be considered for funding. According to PennDOT, municipalities submitted 134 applications, totaling almost $38 million in requests.
Projects were selected by an eight-member committee based on criteria such as benefits and effectiveness, cost, local and regional impact and cost sharing.
The investment brings the total dollars awarded through the ARLE funding program to $78.49 million, funding 416 safety projects since 2010.
