Perhaps related to Wednesday’s storms that caused flooding in parts of the region, the power failed. Emergency backup generators helped shed some light on the situation, but organizers, participants and others in attendance were left to wonder when the overall sense of darkness might be lifted.

Eventually, all the lights came on, to a round of applause. Then they flickered and went back off, to another round of groans.

Finally, they brightened for good, and so the festivities began.

Dinnertime guests were treated to Peters Township High School Interact Club’s annual International Food Fair, an opportunity for students to provide cuisine from various parts of the world while enlightening guests about the accompanying cultures. The community service organization is supported financially by McMurray Rotary Club.

Following the food fair was a World Languages Variety Show, with participants from McMurray Elementary School along with Peters Township’s middle and high schools. Donations were for the benefit of Doctors Without Borders, an international humanitarian medical nongovernmental organization of French origin best known for its projects in conflict zones and in countries affected by endemic diseases.
