Bethel Park
• Bethel Park School District will offer a Federal Programs Family Night from 7 to 8 p.m. Oct. 17 in the community room of the administration building, 301 Church Road.
The program is designed for parents/guardians of English learners and parents/guardians who want more information about federal programs, including Title I.
Speaking that evening will be Bethel Park director of special education Lori Sutton, federal programs coordinator Elizabeth Wells and English as a second language reachers Denise Brown and Jackie Barton.
The event is free, and light refreshments will be served. Anyone who is interested in attending is asked to call 412-854-8735 to make sure enough handout materials are available for everyone in attendance.
Mt. Lebanon
Mt. Lebanon Superintendent Tim Steinhauer accepts the Safe Schools Champion award.
• The Center for Safe Schools and Center for Schools and Communities recognized Mt. Lebanon School District as a Safe Schools Champion for innovation and excellence in developing and promoting efforts to keep students safe, inspire learning and support families.
Mt. Lebanon Superintendent Tim Steinhauer was presented the award Oct. 3 during the 2019 Safe Schools Conference, which brought together state leaders, school administrators, student support and assistance personnel, educators, school nurses and resource officers, law enforcement and other community partners.
According to the Center for Safe Schools:
“Mt. Lebanon School District has supported a district-wide approach to bullying prevention and positive school climate. They have incorporated evidence-based practices based on the individual needs of each building, but coordinated their efforts across the district.”
The annual Safe Schools Conference features state and national experts presenting the latest research and trends in school safety and violence prevention, bullying prevention, school climate and student assistance; and effective program models and promising practices. The 2019 event is sponsored by the Highmark Foundation.

• Nine Mt. Lebanon High School seniors have been selected as National Merit Semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Competition: Reed Christner,William Ganoe,Daniel Huber,Amrit Kaluri,Eddie Kubit,Sein Lee,Zoe Phares,Ella Siefkenand Zoe Thorpe.
They are among the highest scoring entrants in Pennsylvania. Based on the results of the October 2018 PSAT, less than 1 percent of the 1.6 million students who as juniors took the PSAT last fall from across the country have been recognized as National Merit Semifinalists.
• Upper St. Clair High School’s Performing Arts Department will present the play “Almost Maine,” written by John Cariani.
Directed by Larry Cervi, the curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24 and 26. Afternoon matinees are offered at 2 o’clock Oct. 26 and 27. All shows will be held in high school theater.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students and are available at www.usctheater.org. Admission for Upper St. Clair senior citizens is free with a USC Gold Card. Cardholders must obtain their free theater tickets in person at the box office.
Tickets for all shows can be picked up on any of the performance days. The box office opens one hour prior to show time.
