Snow plows usually stay put during the summer, but a dozen of them participated in the Bethel Park Community Day parade.
This year’s route from the municipal building to Bethel Park High School featured the business parts of the public works department vehicles decorated for the occasion, thanks to local elementary students and an art teacher from West Mifflin.
Chris Galiyas answered a call by Susie Dolinar, Bethel Park’s public works director, to assist in bringing the youngsters’ ideas to fruition.
She was inspired by a magazine article to start a Design-a-Plow competition, for which 250 local elementary students submitted designs. Three winners were selected from students in first through fourth grades.
Galiyas worked during the summer on doing the decorating, and by Sept. 14, the plows were ready for Community Day.
A cloudy, humid morning gave way to afternoon sun as Bethel Park residents and their guests enjoyed the event, which kicked off with the parade, followed by a flag ceremony presented by local Scouts. Councilman Mark O’Brien sang “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and the day was ready to proceed.
Presumably, the snow plows won’t be hitting the streets again for quite a while. But as October nears, the prospect looms.
