The pairing of beer and books isn’t such a bad idea, as the second annual Beer for Books to benefit South Fayette Township Library amply demonstrated.

Hosted by Helicon Brewing in Oakdale, the event drew a sizable crowd on a warm early evening in the middle of Love Your Library Month, the annual campaign developed by the Allegheny County Library Association and Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

Thanks to the generosity of the Jack Buncher Foundation, all participating Allegheny County libraries will receive a prorated portion of a $150,000 match pool to support their general operations. All donations received during September, up to a maximum of $500 per donor per library, will count toward the pool.

Helicon’s Chris and Cherie Brunetti, South Fayette residents, donated the brewery’s proceeds for the night to the library, and the two food vendors, Bado’s Pizza Truck and Gyros N’at, also contributed portions of their proceeds.

Providing entertainment was the Dave Iglar Band – featuring daughter Andrea, South Fayette Township’s director of communications and community development, and keyboard player Joel Tischuk of Mt. Lebanon – performing all original compositions.

Members of the South Fayette library board organized the inaugural Beer for Books last year, and it went so well that they decided to do it again.

“We know what the library does for the community, and we think it’s important to reiterate,” Cindy Cox, the board’s president, said while expressing thanks to the event’s sponsors and donors of 32 gift baskets to raise further funding through a raffle.

In addition to Helicon Brewing, sponsorship was provided by Jen Crouse Realtor, Conti Law, Bee’z Bistro & Pub, Dollar Bank, Drs. Michaela and Rahim Remtulla, William F. Caye II, John Kosky Contracting Inc. and Topgolf. For more information about the South Fayette Township Library, visit www.southfayettelibrary.org.
