The 51st season of the Town Hall South lecture series kicks off, appropriately enough, with legendary football coach Lou Holtz Oct. 1.

While the series continues its tradition of bringing renowned writers, actors, politicians and other newsmakers to the Upper St. Clair High School Theater, Town Hall South also maintains a longstanding gift of generosity.

The series, sponsored by Westminster Presbyterian Church, has provided approximately $630,000 to local organizations since its 1969 inception, primarily serving women and children in the South Hills.

Among the 20 recipients last year were agencies that care for homeless women, abused and neglected children, those with mental health challenges, women who are victims of domestic violence, those in hospice and children with special needs.

The funds from Town Hall South paid for respite services for families caring for children with special needs, adult literacy programs, car seats and booster seats for infants and children living with their mothers who are in substance abuse treatment programs, flag blankets for veterans in hospice care, blood pressure cuffs and a 15-passenger van for transporting homeless children and their families, among many other services.

Town Hall South’s gifts come directly from ticket sales, corporate sponsorships and donations.

In addition to Holtz, speakers in this year’s lineup are:

  • Beth Macy, an expert on the opioid epidemic, Nov. 5;
  • Emmy Award winner Alan Zweibel, one of the original “Saturday Night Live” writers, Dec. 3;
  • Violinist and educator Vijay Gupta, who works to merge music with treatment for mental health issues, Feb. 4;
  • Pulitzer Prize-winning news photographer Lynsey Addario, March 17.

The cost for the series – tickets are not sold individually – is $165. Lectures take place at 10:10 a.m. There also is an option for lunch and a question-and-answer session with each speaker afterward at St. Clair Country Club.
