More than 1,200 students received backpacks and school supplies in a record-breaking distribution by South Hills Interfaith Movement.

During the week of Aug. 10, SHIM scheduled times for families to pick up items in Bethel Park, Pleasant Hills and Whitehall.

Youngsters receive their backpacks during a SHIM distribution.

Because of the ongoing impact of COVID-19, the demand for supplies was so great that an order of 30 more backpacks was placed to ensure every student in need received one.

The supplies were donated by Centimark Corp. and through local community collections, helping to provide children in the South Hills with the tools they need to have a successful school year.

SHIM, founded in 1968, is a nonprofit human services organization dedicated to improving the lives of South Hills residents in need, including working to reduce the effects of suburban poverty among the working poor, unemployed, families, single parents, senior citizens, women and the high concentration of refugee families in its service area.

The organization aims to empower individuals and families to achieve stability and self-sufficiency by offering short-term help with basic needs – such as food, clothing and utilities – and longer-term support through employment, financial planning, youth programs and family support, to help people build and sustain promising futures.
