The Upper St. Clair community has the opportunity to attend two screenings of the documentary “Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age,” Feb. 18.

The 67-minute film will be shown at 10 a.m. at McLaughlin Run Road Activity Center and at 7 p.m. at the Boyce Middle School theater, 1500 Boyce Road. A facilitated discussion will follow each showing.

The program, which is free and open to all, is sponsored by several Upper St. Clair groups including the township library, Parent Teacher Council’s Wellness Committee, Youth Steering Committee, community foundation, community and recreation center and the school district.

Released in 2016, “Screenagers” encourages parents and educators to engage in the conversation about how screen time impacts their lives and what they can do about it.

According to the film’s website, “Screenagers is the first feature documentary to explore the impact of screen technology on kids and offer parents and families proven solutions that work. What started out as a personal story for one has grown into a national movement, helping millions of teens and their families navigate growing up in a world with instant access to screens.”

Common Sense Media, the leading resource of media and technology information for families and schools, reported:

“Parents need to know that ‘Screenagers’ is a documentary that will likely strike a chord with many parents. It explores how teens interact with each other using electronic devices and looks at whether parents can, or should, try to limit or control this behavior. Many experts share their thoughts on the topics the movie covers, which include tech addiction, violent video games, digital citizenship and more.”

In March, community members will be able to view the followup documentary, “Screenagers Next Chapter: Uncovering Skills for Stress Resilience,” released in 2019. Showings will be available at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. March 10.
