Bethel Park

• Bethel Park High School has been selected to receive the National School Blood Drive Award from the Association of Donor Relations Professionals in recognition of exceptional commitment to establishing blood donation as a priority among students.

The award is given annually to a college, university or high school. Bethel Park is the first Pennsylvania school to receive the recognition.

For the past 13 years, students have been conducting multiple blood drives each year at the high school, under the direction of the Principals Advisory Council of Students. This year, DECA students have also been involved in organizing the drives and recruitment of donors.

The award will be presented to high school Principal Zeb Jansante at the Association of Donor Relations Professionals national awards ceremony in Phoenix, Ariz., in May.

• The Rotary Club of Bethel Park named Bethel Park High School senior Olivia Greene as its February student of the month.

Each month during the school year, the Rotary recognizes a Bethel Park High School student who has demonstrated outstanding service to school and/or community. Olivia was recognized for her involvement at school as DECA co-president, and as a member of the National Honor Society and Senior Ways and Means. She also was honored at the Diocese of Pittsburgh’s annual Medallion Ball for her community service work at Artis Senior Living and St. Clair Hospital.

• Bethel Park High School will stage “Guys and Dolls” as its 2020 musical at 7:30 p.m. March 18-21 in the school auditorium, 309 Church Road.

All tickets are $10, payable with cash or check make out to “Bethel Park School District.” Tickets will go on sale to the public on March 2 and will be sold from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. daily through March 10 from in the high school athletic entrance Lobby.

Evening ticket sales will be held from 6 to 7:30 on March 5 and 6 in the main lobby. Any remaining tickets can be purchased at the door on performance evenings.

Senior citizens can receive half-price admission to the Wednesday and Thursday performances only. Students in kindergarten through fourth grade can receive half-price admission to all performances, but only if the tickets are purchased at the door on performance evenings.

• Parents whose children will be age 5 by Sept. 1 are encouraged to register their children in March for Bethel Park School District kindergarten.

Prior to their child’s registration date, parents should download and complete the kindergarten registration packet, which can be found at https://www.bpsd.org/KindergartenRegistrationForms.aspx. Packets are also available at any Bethel Park elementary school.

In addition to the completed packet, parents also should bring their child, their child’s original birth certificate and proof of Bethel Park residency with them to registration.

Kindergarten registration is scheduled from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 1:30 to 3 p.m. March 3 at George Washington Elementary, 515 Clifton Road, 412-854-8546; 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 1:30 to 3 p.m. March 4 at Abraham Lincoln Elementary, 1524 Hamilton Road, 412-854-8618; 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 1:30 to 3 p.m. March 5 at Benjamin Franklin Elementary, 5400 Florida Ave., 412-854-8741; 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 1:30 to 3 p.m. March 10 at Bethel Park Community Center, 5151 Park Ave., for Memorial Elementary School, 412-854-8506; and 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 1:30 to 3 p.m. March 12 for William Penn Elementary, 110 Woodlet Lane, 412-854-8522. Please call the schools to schedule registration times.

Evening registration at the administration building, 301 Church Road, is from 5 to 7 on March 16 from 5 to 7 PM for parents who are unable to attend scheduled registrations at their children’s school. Please call 412-854-8420 to schedule an appointment.

Parents who have questions are encouraged to contact their children’s elementary schools directly.

Upper St. Clair

• A team of Boyce Middle School students recently placed first at the annual Science Bowl at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Team members were sixth-grader Ayan Singh Amin and fifth-graders Erika Metzger, Mackenzie Pope and Jonah Zahalsky.

The event, sponsored by the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, was open to students in fourth through eighth grades. Students competed in four hands-on challenges and scavenger hunts: “Do You See What I See,” “Explore Anywhere,” “Fur, Feathers and Scales” and “Who Am I? (Dinosaurs).”

Accompanying the students was Susan Fleckenstein, gifted and enrichment resource teacher.

• Upper St. Clair School District is hosting a job fair from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 27, in the high school cafeteria. Attendees should enter the school via the theater entrance, adjacent to the parking lot.

Candidates will have the opportunity to interview for several open positions and/or anticipated new positions within the district’s operations department, including bus attendants and bus drivers, part-time and substitutes; custodial/maintenance managers (anticipated), full-time; custodians, full-time and substitutes; nutrition center general works, part-time and substitutes; and teacher aides, substitutes.

Those who are interested can apply for one or more positions online in advance of the job fair or complete the application process at a computer station during the event. If needed, technological assistance will be provided. All candidates should bring a resume for an on-site interview.

Successful candidates will need to provide background clearances, letters of reference, medical/drug test results and other required paperwork.
