Bethel Park

• Bethel Park High School sophomore Briauna Harris received the Extra Effort Award for the Second quarter of the 2019-2020 school year from the Steel Center for Career and Technical Education.

Briauna is a student in the baking program at Steel Center.

The award is given to students who demonstrate outstanding attitude, work ethic, attendance and dependability.

Upper St. Clair

• A free program, “Becoming a Competitive College Applicant,” is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 5, 2020, in the Upper St. Clair High School theater.

The program, intended for families with students in eighth through 11th grades, will feature admissions representatives from Allegheny College, High Point University, North Carolina State University, Penn State University and Indiana University – Bloomington.

In addition to school overviews and a panel discussion, the event will offer a question-and-answer session for students and their families.

• The Youth Steering Committee of Upper St. Clair is hosting its Winter Blast for students in fifth and sixth grade from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Community and Recreation Center at Boyce Mayview Park.

The event offers activities including a dodgeball tournament, bingo, giant Jenga, an inflatable attraction, live DJ and more. Refreshments are included with admission. Gym shoes are recommended.

The cost is $10 per student with a family maximum of $20. The admission fee is waived for families who wish to chaperone. All chaperones must have clearances. Payment, check or cash, will be collected at the door. Please make checks payable to Upper St. Clair School District.

Pre-registration is highly recommended. Registration will also be available at the door.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item or personal care item in support of the USC Parent Teacher Council food drive to benefit the South Hills Interfaith Movement. There will be a box for donations in the lobby.

The event is sponsored by USC Cares for Kids, an initiative of the Youth Steering Committee of Upper St. Clair.
