Influential rabbi to visit Temple Emanuel for Sajowitz Endowment Fund Weekend
Rabbi Menachem Creditor will be the scholar in residence Feb. 28 and 29 as part of Sajowitz Endowment Fund Weekend at Temple Emanuel of South Hills in Mt. Lebanon.
Creditor serves as the Pearl and Ira Meyer Scholar in Residence at UJA-Federation of New York. Previously, he led Congregation Netivot Shalom in Berkeley, Calif., and he is the founder and co-chairman of Rabbis Against Gun Violence.
A frequent speaker in communities and campuses around the United States and Israel, with more than 1 million views of his online videos, he was named by Newsweek as one of the 50 most influential rabbis in America.
His 19 books and six albums of original music include the global Jewish anthem “Olam Chesed Yibaneh” and the Rabbis Against Gun Violence anthology “None Shall Make Them Afraid.” He has been involved in the leadership of American Jewish World Service, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and the One America Movement, an organization dedicated to bringing together Americans of different faiths and opinions.
“Rabbi Creditor is a national thought leader on Jewish uses and abuses of power and the leading rabbinic voice on gun violence prevention,” Temple Emanual Senior Rabbi Aaron Meyer said. “His talks throughout the weekend are certain to both challenge and inspire.”
The weekend will begin with a Shabbat service at 6 p.m., during which Creditor will deliver the D’var Torah. Dinner at $10 per person following the service will include a lecture by Creditor about uses and abuses of power in the Jewish community.
He will lead Torah study at 9 a.m. Saturday, followed by a learning session about gun violence and the Jewish community.
After lunch, he will facilitate a learning session about LGBTQ+ individuals, concerns and cares in the Jewish community.
The Saturday sessions and lunch are free. All events are open to the community.
