Fourteen years ago, Peters Township Public Library received a check for $300 from the nearby Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Park Post 764.

“We truly appreciate all that you do for our community and the citizens in it,” U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Lew Irwin, the post’s community partnership chairman at the time, wrote. “We are truly pleased to support such a worthy cause.”

What started in 2006 has blossomed into a long-term partnership, with the VFW’s Honorarium Grant/Symposium funding continuing to support library programs meeting the objective of civic education in the Peters Township community.

In terms of educational programming, the library also has a 16-year partnership with World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, which has the mission of developing a more globally minded region.

The council’s next program at the library – with financial support from Post 764 – is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 6. The program will feature a panel discussion on “Tackling Global Threats: Challenges Facing National Security.”

Col. Jonathan Shine, assistant professor of strategy at U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, will serve as moderator. The panelists are four senior military officers at the college, all lieutenant colonels, who will give presentations on applicable topics:

  • Joe Buccino, U.S. Army, “A National Security Crisis: Why We Need Military Forces Along Our Southwest Border”
  • Amanda Evans, U.S. Air Force, “The State Partnership Program: Promoting Enduring Security Relationships with Allies”
  • Aaron Sadusky, U.S. Army, “Mandatory National Service: A Bridge to Fix the Civilian-Military Divide?”
  • David Short, U.S. Army, “What is the Future of Warfare in Space?”

The event is part of the Eisenhower Series College Program, established in 1969 as a War College academic outreach. The first Eisenhower panel discussion at Peters Township Public Library was in 2006, on the topic “National Security for a New Era: The Evolution of Cooperation, Competition and Conflict.”

Recent forums also have been in conjunction with Pennsylvania Library Association’s PA Forward initiative, intended to give people of all ages the knowledge and skills they need to improve their lives, to contribute effectively in their communities and to participate in civil discourse.

Acknowledging its extended partnership, World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh awarded a certificate of appreciation to the library for “consistently displaying tireless energy, imagination, and initiative in coordinating book lists, employing multimedia displays, and broadcasting video-recordings of programs,” as part of “their vision, energy, dedicating, and sustained support of a model collaboration in the interests of civic education and community engagement in the critical affairs of our nation.”

Registration is requested for “Tackling Global Threats: Challenges Facing National Security.” Visit ptlibrary.org/events or call 724-941-9430, ext. 1.
