To celebrate its 110th anniversary, the Baptist Homes Society will mark the occasion at each of its two campuses

On March 26, the anniversary of the nonprofit’s incorporation, the celebration will take place at 2 p.m. in the activity room at the Mt. Lebanon facility, 489 Castle Shannon Blvd. The following day’s festivities are at Providence Point in Scott Township, also at 2 p.m.

Baptist Homes Society has seen tremendous change and growth since its origins in 1910, when it was established as a home for widows and orphans. A group of more than 90 baptist churches in the region gathered their resources and created the Baptist Home for Widows and Orphans, leasing a large home in West Newton and soon outgrowing the space.

The organization then purchased land and built a facility in Mt. Lebanon, which opened in 1915 and continues to be in use today. Two cottages were added to the campus in 1926, and a residential wing and intermediate care unit were added in 1951. A nursing center, which allowed Baptist Homes to provide a higher level of care to its residents, was dedicated in 1965.

Baptist Homes Society was also the first senior community to offer HUD-financed housing in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. Baptist Manor, a 100-unit apartment complex for lower-income adults 62 and over or mobility impaired individuals, opened in 1979.

A nursing center addition, with larger resident rooms, opened in 1985 and renovation of the 54-room personal care residence was completed in 1987. A new chapel, a prominent feature of the campus, was built in 1988.

In 2009, following six years of planning and construction, the 32-acre life plan community Providence Point opened. The community recently completed an expansion and now is home to more than 550 older adults.
