Bethel Park to fix landslide

It will cost more than $700,000 to repair a collapsed storm sewer that caused a small landslide near Steeplechase Court in Bethel Park.
Bethel Park Council agreed at the meeting March 9 to hire A. Merante Contracting of Brentwood to make the repairs. That project will cost $732,000.
Heavy rains caused the storm sewer to collapse last month.
The subsequent landslide primarily affected two properties in the Saddlebrook Farms neighborhood, but it did not impact the road.
Council also agreed to refinance up to $40 million in debt held by Bethel Park Municipal Authority.
The bonds were originally issued in 2004 for various capital projects for the sewer system and the municipality refinanced the bonds in 2013.
Bethel Park will refinance again to take advantage of lower interest rates.
Council president Tim Moury said he expects the authority will save at least $200,000 from the refinancing. That money will be used for improvements to the sewer system.
Council accepted retirements from two police officers, John Symsek and James Linz, who both have retirement dates of July 1.
Dr. Tim Campbell, ward 2 councilman, announced he helped to organize a coronavirus seminar at at Bethel Park Community Center.
The event will be a question and answer format where community members can ask questions about the virus and learn how to protect themselves and their families.
