Three Upper St. Clair students tied for first place in the virtual CalcuSolve competition Jan. 26. Fort Couch Middle School eighth-graders Jamie Barrett, Eitan Schwartz and Yuhong Shi earned perfect scores in the individual competition.

In team competition, the Fort Couch team of Jamie, Eitan, Yuhong and seventh-grader Jeffery Zhang finished second among 35 teams from throughout Western Pennsylvania.

Teams of four students worked in groups and as individuals to complete difficult math problems in a timed setting over Zoom. During the competition, students completed seven individual problems and two team problems.

Other Fort Couch Middle School students participating in the CalcuSolve event included seventh-graders Pritika Gupta and Kaia Petrick, as well as eighth graders Tyler McClintock-Comeaux and Ishaan Sharma. The students were coached by Jason O’Roark, gifted coordinator and accelerated math teacher.

The annual math competition is sponsored by the II-VI Foundation and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit.
