A Peters Township business has been granted permission to host food trucks on a limited basis.

Township council voted unanimously July 12 to approve a special permit requested by Samuel Fee, owner of Mondays Brewing LLC, which opened last fall in Waterdam Plaza.

“While our license enables us to operate a kitchen, we have instead elected to partner with local area restaurants to provide food to patrons,” Fee wrote in his proposal for the permit, also stating the restaurants would have the opportunity to set up at the brewery to complement the food trucks.

“This also provides us with an opportunity to further strengthen our ties to local restaurants while providing them with additional revenue streams as we all try to recover from the pandemic of the past year,” according to the proposal.

Mondays has established an outdoor seating area that features concrete barriers to safeguard against vehicles.

“We’re in a very nice location to pull this off, as far as the parking lot in Waterdam is concerned. And we’re pretty much the only place that’s open on the weekends, which is what we’re looking for, besides a couple of restaurants farther up,” Fee told council, referencing businesses within the plaza to the north of his location.

While he listed a series of prospective dates in July through September for special events, the number could be limited.

“We might not be able to get that many food trucks this late in the season, so it might end up being twice or three times,” he said.

A letter to Fee from J. Alex Hardy – president of Hardy Enterprises LLC, the general partner and management company for Waterdam – confirmed his agreement for the brewery hosting food trucks with some stipulations, including the occasions being limited to Saturdays or Sundays.

“Overall, I think the flexibility in food diversity provided by food trucks would complement the differing beers that you may blend,” Hardy wrote. “The side area of the building next to your space also allows for a non-obtrusive location for service and parking.”

Although she voted in favor of Mondays’ permit, council member Monica Merrell pointed out she and her fellow elected officials previously denied a request for food trucks by another organization.

“Could we begin to develop an ordinance that talks about food trucks?” she asked. “There should be something where we have some consistent guidelines.”

Assistant township manager Ryan Jeroski said he has been examining what other communities are doing in that regard.

“It’s something that many communities have undertaken and struggled with,” he said. “It’s all over the board. There’s really no one standardized policy across the municipalities.”
