‘Bigger’ fireworks display set for Bethel Park’s Summer Spectacular

Bethel Park’s Summer Spectacular is scheduled to begin, with parking lots opening at 7 p.m., and a fireworks display setting off at 9:40 June 26.
The traditional event was canceled last year because of COVID-19.
Normally held at the municipality’s Millennium Park, this year’s program will feature designated parking areas throughout the community to better spread out guests.
“We came up with the concept of decentralizing the event to keep guests comfortable and safe, but we found that by having disbursed viewing areas, we’ll actually enable more people to see the display,” municipal manager Laurence Christian said. “So from that aspect, it turned out to be quite positive.”
Parking areas for the spectacular include Abraham Lincoln Elementary School, Hamilton Presbyterian Church, Bethel Park Shop ‘n Save, Lowe’s, Giant Eagle/Walmart, Hillcrest Shopping Center — participants should not park by Bruster’s — and St. Germaine Church.
“We’re very grateful for these businesses approving use of their lots for the program,” said Christian. “They saw what we wanted to do for the residents, and they were happy to assist us. We couldn’t have held the event without their help.”
And residents are in store for a more substantial display this year compared with those in the past.
“This year’s show by Celebration Fireworks will be about 25 minutes long and be much bigger than in previous years. And because we’ll have Millennium Park closed for the event, we’ll be able to shoot the fireworks a bit higher so that more people will be able to see them,” Christian said.
Refreshments will be sold at some parking locations. Updates will be posted on the municipality’s website, www.bethelpark.net, and its Facebook page, Municipality of Bethel Park.
“We really want everyone to enjoy the show,” Christian said. “This is one of the bigger events that we’re doing as we emerge form the dark days of the pandemic and we’re looking forward to holding such a positive program that will hopefully bring joy to our residents of all ages.”
In case of inclement weather, the event will be held June 27 at the same time.
Municipal representatives will be on hand at each parking site.
