A Baker Elementary fourth-grader has excelled at several recent regional and national academic competitions.

At age 9, Bernard Huang has a growing résumé of accomplishments in history, geography and mathematics.

This spring Bernard earned high marks at the regional qualifiers to advance to the national-level competition of the Academic Bee, National History Bee and International Geography Bee. In the Academic Bee, he finished 23rd in the country among elementary students up to and including fifth grade.

Bernard also participated in three different mathematics competitions. As a fourth-grader, he earned the third highest score in New York State in the sixth-grade level of the Math League competition. He also ranked in the top 20 nationally in 2021 Math Kangaroo level 4 competition, and in the top 2% nationally in 2020-2021 Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools Division E competition.

A student in Nicole Trollman’s class at Baker Elementary, Bernard moved to Upper St. Clair from New York in January with his family. In his spare time, he enjoys hanging out with friends, hiking with family, reading World War II history, and, most of all, performing a stand-up talk show.
