Folks grabbed hot cocoa and gathered outside the Carnegie borough building Dec. 2 for the annual Christmas tree lighting. Performers from Higher Voice Studio sang familiar tunes and children ran up and down the steps, eagerly awaiting the arrival of Old St. Nick and his sidekick, the Grinch.
The duo rose high above the crowd in a firetruck bucket as onlookers counted down; the Grinch sprinkled magic dust down, down, transforming dark boughs into brightly lit Christmas tree branches ornamented in extra-large candy canes, bells and baubles.
“I’m just excited because we’re able to get back to how we did the event before COVID,” said Carnegie Mayor Stacey Riley. “This event, it just kicks off the holiday season. There’s just a sense of excitement that it brings to the community.”
Following the tree lighting ceremony, kids were invited to share their Christmas wishes with Santa Claus, who posed for pictures and gifted each young attendee a wrapped present. Folks were welcomed to snack on popcorn while a Christmas movie played, color and write letters to Santa.
Borough residents enjoyed mingling, warm beverages in hand, while the Keystone Chorus barbershop quartet performed. The merriment continues this Saturday, Dec. 17, with Christmas in Carnegie, which runs from 1 to 6 p.m. For more on upcoming festivities, visit https://carnegieborough.com.
