The Upper St. Clair-Bethel Breakfast Rotary boasts an overarching mission of “Service above Self” and the organization lived up to that statement with its annual collection for Washington City Mission.

Members recently filled a 53-foot tractor-trailer with donated items from the surrounding communities.

Among the volunteers in the group included Cindy Albert, Elaine Shedd, Karen Lucca, Russ and Renee Spicuzza, Dave Hicks, Chris Lewis, Dr. Keith Apelgren, Sally Morrision, Justin Tiano and Beth & Dr. Roger Zelt.

The breakfast club is involved in many community service projects.

With the assistance of Laurence Christian and the Municipality of Bethel Park, this year’s event was a success, says Spicuzza.

Coordinating with Eric Smith from the mission, the event provided many items to be used, recycled or sold to help support the organization. Tom DeRubeis secured the donation of the truck to house the collectibles.

The Rotary also supports the Bethel Park Interact Club, in conjunction with the BP Evening Club. It provides community service-based scholarships to USC and BP students.

A sample of other projects include working at the SHIM garden at Gilfillan Farm and serving dinner at the Light of Life Mission. The group is also featured at the farmer’s market at the Westminster Presbyterian Church parking lot on Tuesdays from 3 to 7 p.m.

The rotary’s next fundraiser will be a chicken barbecue to be held Sept. 17 at Bethel Park High School. Tickets and sponsorships are available.

The breakfast club meets at 7 a.m. Tuesdays at the Porch at Sienna.
