Elks Lodge No. 2213 in the South Hills is aiming to make a difference for veterans this holiday season.

The lodge, located at 2789 South Park Road, Bethel Park, is taking part in the national Elks’ Veterans Leather Program.

If their local Elks lodge is participating, hunters can donate deer hides, which will then be turned into leather gloves for veterans in wheelchairs. Some leather is also used to provide free craft kits for veterans that can be used for therapy programs.

This is the third year the South Hills lodge has taken part in the program.

“We’re the first Elks in Pennsylvania to do it,” said Bonnie Filyo, exalted ruler of Elks Lodge No. 2213.

They will be collecting hides through the end of February.

According to the Elks website, in 2019 the organization collected 17,234 hides from lodges in 12 states. With that, more than 3,000 veterans received gloves, and another 10,620 received craft kits.
