Choco Tacos are described as a “fudge-swirled vanilla ice cream in a sugar cone taco with a peanut-sprinkled chocolate coating.”

Yum. That sounds like it would hit the spot on the hottest July day. Come to think of it, it would also probably hit the spot on the coldest day in January.

The ice cream treat created by the Klondike company ended up winning legions of fans in the 40 years it was available, and they were left bitterly disappointed with the news this summer that Klondike was going to discontinue the Choco Taco so it can focus on other products. Though the company has recently suggested it might eventually revive the snack, the news left some Choco Taco enthusiasts disconsolate. One took to Twitter and stated, “Of all the things that have happened over the last few years, the news that the Choco Taco is no more has to be the hardest to hear. I’m going to need time to process this and deal with it.”

Until a potential Choco Taco restoration occurs, those taco-shaped waffle cones are going to be precious commodities. And Beedle’s Ice Cream in Bethel Park still has a whole case of 24 in their possession. They are planning on raffling it off at the end of the month to a lucky Choco Taco fanatic. The winner will also be eligible to win an ice cream party for up to 50 people. Two second-place winners and two third-place winners will also be drawn.

Leslie Gilkis, one of the owners of Beedle’s Ice Cream, said Choco Tacos were always a smash hit with customers when they would sell them at locations like the Upper St. Clair Rotary Farmer’s Market.

“We would sell out of them immediately,” Gilkis said.

The reaction of those customers when they found out Choco Tacos were going away?

“Very upset” and “severe disappointment,” according to Gilkis. One customer at the farmer’s market was so upset “she wouldn’t buy anything else.”

Proceeds will benefit Beedles Ice Cream and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a nonprofit based in Staten Island, N.Y., that helps the families of veterans and first responders receive mortgage-free homes. The deadline to enter is Saturday, Oct. 29, and a drawing on Facebook Live is planned for Monday, Oct. 31, at 9 p.m. Ma & Pop’s Country Kitchen and the DMV Bar and Grill, both in Bethel Park, are among the spots where people can enter.
