Upper St. Clair junior named Carson Scholar

Matthew Bordenstein has been selected as a 2023 Carson Scholar. The Upper St. Clair High School junior received a $1,000 scholarship, medal and a certificate at the annual Carson Scholars Awards Banquet held April 23 at Acrisure Stadium.
Bordenstein serves the Pittsburgh area as an ambassador for Bookworm Global, a teen-led organization that donates gently used books and educational resources to children in underserved communities. He has collected and donated more than 4,000 books over the last two years.
At USC, Bordenstein is involved with the Leadership Academy, Jewish Student Union and the Business & Finance Club. He also serves as a Junior Mentor, assisting ninth-grade students with the transition to high school. Outside of school, he is a volunteer in Friendship Circle of Pittsburgh, a community-based program that brings together people of diverse abilities and interests.
Founded by Ben Carson, neurosurgeon and former secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the scholars program recognizes talented and dedicated students in grades 4 to 12 who are committed to making a difference in their communities.
