An Upper St. Clair student placed first among third-graders in the Pittsburgh region in the National Energy Technology Laboratory’s (NETL) 2023 Earth Day Poster Contest. Lillian Pfeiffer, a student in Anne Conrad’s class at Streams Elementary School, will have her award-winning artwork displayed in the U.S. Department of Energy headquarters in Washington, D.C.

“Lillian created an original and imaginative poster,” said Streams principal Dr. Lindsay Klousnitzer. “With Earth Day being celebrated on April 22, this opportunity allowed some of our students to engage in an experience focusing on the importance of caring for the planet.”

The poster contest drew approximately 950 entries from elementary students in grades 1-5 at schools near NETL’s sites in Morgantown, W.Va.; Albany, Ore.; and Pittsburgh. This year, students were asked to design their posters around the theme, “Invest in Our Planet. What will you do?” Students used their creativity and imaginations to showcase their favorite ways to protect the environment.

First-, second-, third- and fourth-place winning posters are displayed on the NETL’s website and were forwarded to the U.S. Department of Energy headquarters in Washington, D.C. for display there. In addition, Pfeiffer’s artwork can be seen in the main entrance of Streams Elementary School.
