Jon Gentile lives on. He thrives in the spirit of Nick Perdziola such that the recent Bethel Park High School graduate was awarded the Big Heart Scholarship.

Established in Gentile’s memory by his family, the stipend serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the 38-year-old social studies teacher who died May 24, 2022, in a kayaking accident.

Gentile’s life was an example of kindness, generosity and relentless dedication to lifting up others. The scholarship was created to perpetuate Gentile’s spirit of giving and inclusivity.

“As a family, we believe strongly in the impact a big heart can have on the lives of others,” said Jon’s widow, Kathy. “We witnessed this impact simply by being fortunate to have Jon in our lives. Much like us, his students reaped those benefits as well.”

Perdziola took Gentile’s course as a junior. No matter what kind of day he was having, Perdziola anticipated the class.

“The best part of knowing Mr. Gentile was his kindness and support. He always had a way to let you know things would work out and be OK,” Perdziola said in his scholarship essay.

Perdziola also noted that “Big Heart” was the perfect name for the scholarship because it accurately described Gentile’s persona. He said the most important lesson he learned from his mentor was acceptance.

“I will forever practice his philosophy of accepting people for who they are wherever I go in life. (Gentile’s) presence will always be with me and the many other students that were touched by his kindness.”

From the start, Perdziola battled inclusion. He started life in a different country. He was adopted as a toddler. Perdziola also “struggled” with speech, math, reading and motor skills but became the person he is today because of his parents. They instilled in him an easygoing personality and a kind heart.

As he ages, Perdziola gains an understanding of the responsibilities of adults to look out for those who need extra support or guidance. So the scholarship will support those endeavors.

“We feel that an annual scholarship to a deserving student is an ideal way to honor Jon and the student of choice in living a life of strong character, kindness, and integrity,” said Kathy Gentile.

“Nick has perfectly embodied these qualities and the values championed by the scholarship. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for this deserving young man.”

Perdziola is headed to Duquesne University. He will use the $9,170 award to pay for his studies. Perdziola is interested in pharmacy.

During his time in high school, Perdziola demonstrated an unwavering commitment to community service, fostering inclusivity, and spreading positivity.

He belonged to the Interact Club, Environmental Club, Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and DECA. He also works part time at a local pharmacy.

The Big Heart Scholarship is administered through BOLD.org, which is the largest independent provider in the U.S. Big Heart is distinct in its selection criteria. It focuses on character, rather than traditional academic or athletic achievements.

According to Kathy Gentile, it celebrates high school students who prioritize the well-being of others, exemplify inclusivity, and spread joy in their community. The Big Heart Scholarship encourages a new generation of compassionate leaders by shifting the focus to qualities that truly reflect the essence of humanity.

“It truly honors Jon’s memory and inspires future generations to lead with compassion and empathy.”
