Velvet beauties

Three bucks in velvet hang out around a backyard bird feeder in Bethel Park. In late August or early September, growth is complete and blood ceases to flow to the antlers. The process initiates drying of the velvet, which is then sloughed or rubbed off, resulting in polished, hard antlers during the breeding season. The velvet shedding occurs rapidly, usually in less than 24 hours. Nevertheless, homeowners should be on alert. Deer often use tree trunks and shrubs to rub the itchy material from their racks.
