Mt. Lebanon ‘snow angels’ help keep sidewalks clear
A new program in Mt. Lebanon is connecting volunteers with senior citizens in the community who need help shoveling snow off their sidewalks.
Residents can head to the website to sign up to be a “Snow Angel,” and likewise those in need of assistance can also fill out a form available at mtlebanon.org.
“I’ll send the volunteer their resident contact information,” said Gregory Wharton, Mt. Lebanon’s urban planning and sustainability coordinator. “It’s to ensure the snow clearing of our public walkways and sidewalks.”
Wharton said he presented the plan to the Mt. Lebanon commission in November.
“They were all hands on deck,” Wharton said.
According to Wharton, Mt. Lebanon is simply acting as a “communications pipeline.”
“We’re connecting residents in need and volunteers in the area who may not know each other,” Wharton said.
As the region prepared for a winter storm to begin the morning of Dec. 23, Wharton said volunteers were already reaching out the night before to confirm their assignments.
“We didn’t realize we were going to be getting snow already, but here we are,” Wharton said.
According to Wharton, there are 22 volunteers, but sign up sheets are still active for anyone who wants to help.
“I’m really glad a lot of people are willing to help out in the community. It really goes to show it’s a great community based program. I’m excited to move this thing forward,” Wharton said.
