Carnegie Arts Walk celebrates borough’s connections to the arts
Carnegie is the home of more than 20 businesses that in some way support the visual or performing arts, and the borough’s connections to the arts will be celebrated next Saturday through the Carnegie Arts Walk.
Set to start at 11 a.m., it will include art exhibits, music, dance, tours and hands-on demonstrations at 30 stops. This is the second time Carnegie has hosted an arts walk. The idea for it came about from Kate McGrady, the owner of Artsmiths of Pittsburgh, which had a physical location in Carnegie until McGrady’s retirement late last year. A committee was formed and the inaugural arts walk happened July 9, 2022.
“We had a tremendous turnout,” said Pat Klug, one of the event’s organizers.
New at this year’s arts walk is a juried art show, featuring more than 20 artists displaying original work. An artist reception is planned for Friday at 5 p.m. It will be at Double Dog Studios, a gallery on Second Avenue in the borough. Also, the Standard Clay Company on Chestnut Street is hosting a Clay Market, and a beer garden at DeBlaze at 131 restaurant, located at 131 E. Main St.
Other happenings on the Carnegie Arts Walk will include:
n St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Church is opening its doors so visitors can see fresco paintings made by Carnegie resident Mike Kapla, and Kapla will be discussing his work at 2 and 3 p.m. that day. Donations are being accepted to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.
n Local artists will be painting outside during an event hosted by Philip Salvato, the owner of the 3rd Street Gallery. A reception to sell their work will be at the gallery.
n The Andrew Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall will be hosting activities, including a free jazz concert at 5 p.m.
n The Historical Society of Carnegie, including the Honus Wagner Museum, will be open.
The Carnegie Arts Walk will wrap up at 6 p.m. For additional information, go to visitcarnegie.com.
