USC approves 2023-24 school calendar

2 min read

The Upper St. Clair School Board approved the 2023-24 school calendar during its recent meeting.

The first day of school for students in grades 1-12 is Wednesday, Aug. 23. To accommodate screening and orientation activities, kindergarten students will begin Aug. 25.

Based on parent and teacher feedback, the teacher-in-service days at the end of October have been moved to Friday, Oct. 27, and Wednesday, Nov. 1. This change enables students to be off the day following Halloween.

“This year school was in session the day after Halloween. In reviewing the attendance data for that day – including tardies and absences – this adjustment to the calendar is warranted,” Dr. John Rozzo, superintendent of schools, said. “The main driver in this change is the attendance data.”

Thanksgiving recess includes Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Nov. 22-24. School resumes Nov. 27. An 11-day Winter Break begins following an early dismissal on Friday, Dec. 22, and continues through Monday, Jan. 1. Students return to school on Tuesday, Jan. 2.

A 10-day spring break is set for the week preceding Easter and the following Monday. Students are off school starting on March 25 through April 1 with students returning to school on Tuesday, April 2.

The last day of school for students is Thursday, June 6, which is an early dismissal. High school commencement is also set for June 6.

The proposed calendar was presented at the January school board meeting and was subsequently shared with the school community. Families and staff had the opportunity to provide input prior to the calendar’s adoption.

Some requests were not able to be accommodated due to contractual obligations, including in-service days that coincide with the end of the marking period, or due to in-services that are held on specific days, such as Election Day.

An interfaith calendar will be shared with district staff. Teachers and building leaders are asked to consider the impact holy days may have on student attendance when planning assessments and activities, as well as building and district-wide events.
