Bethel Park enters into new contract with Waste Management

Beginning Jan. 1, Bethel Park will begin a new contract with Waste Management for refuse and recycling services.
Bethel Park is one of many other South Hills communities entering into the new contract bid through South Hills Area Council Of Governments (SHACOG) for 2024.
“Costs have gone up, but we worked very hard to get the best contract we could to service our community,” said Bethel Park Municipal Council President Tim Moury. “We’ve also been able to negotiate the addition of glass recycling to our contract, and that’s been a very positive outcome.”
Another outcome of the new contract includes the ability to have two trash carts per household as well as a recycling cart. Many other South Hills communities will only offer one trash and one recycling cart.
Trash pickup days will remain the same for residents and anyone who’d like a third cart (65 or 95 gallon) can do so for an additional charge by Waste Managnement of $110 per cart for 2024. No items will be picked up outside of the cart any longer beginning in January. However, bulk item pickup will be scheduled monthly (two items per month) with details being finalized.
Bethel Park will also be moving to automated recycling with residents receiving new 95-gallon recycling carts.
“The year will begin with traditional pickup while Waste Management works to deliver the new automated recycling carts to residents during the first quarter of 2024,” said Municipal Manager Kristen Denne.
Back door pickup will be available for those who need it with a doctor’s note. Those who are medically disabled will continue to have this service at no cost.
“We’ll continue to keep the community updated as we move forward with the new contract,” said Denne.
