ARTS & MUSIC

The Bethel Park Art & Music Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 25 along the Park Avenue streetscape, from the School House Arts & History Center to the community center. Admission is free.

The music schedule at the community center is: 10 a.m. Jessica Lee & Friends Jazz Duo; 11:30 a.m. John Sarkis Duo; Hugo Cruz and Caminos LLC at 2 p.m. and Antoinette Managas & Sean Baker at 3 p.m.

The schedule at the Schoolhouse Arts & History Center features Acoustic Brew 412 at 10 a.m.; CAMA – Cello & Violin at 11 a.m.; Harry L. Funk at noon; Mike Ferrari Music at 1 p.m.; The Joe & Jackie Show at 2 p.m., and Andrew Bicsey at 3 p.m.

In addition to 10 food trucks, there will be more than 100 artists exhibiting paintings, gifts, glass work, Henna artist, jewelry, mixed media, photography and wood carvings.

A free shuttle service will be provided from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. from the following points in the municipality: South Hills Interfaith Movement, 5301 Park Ave.; Bethel Park High School, 309 Church Road; and the Port Authority Park and Ride lot, 5081 Brightwood Road.

In addition to 80 local artists, there will be live music, food trucks and raffles.

BACK PACKS

To help ease back-to-school costs for local families, Verizon Wireless retail locations across Pittsburgh will be giving away hundreds of free backpacks at 1 p.m. on July 26. Also, dozens of students nationwide will randomly receive a golden ruler keychain attached to their backpack, winning a special prize ahead of the new school year.

Local store locations for the 14th annual “School Rocks Backpack Giveaway” include: 1600 Washington Road, Suite C in Mount Lebanon; 4120 Washington Roadd in McMurray; 4225 Brownsville Road, Suite 3 in Brentwood; and 42 Trinity Point Drive in Washington.

SHW CLUB

The South Hills Women’s Club meets monthly September to December and March to June. Speakers and social activities are planned each month.

Recently the club made a charitable donation to The Diaper Pantry at Peters Creek Baptist Church and installed new members at a pot luck dinner. Diaper Pantry representatives Cathy Diller (founder) and Betty Klavon (head of volunteers) attended.

The Diaper Pantry at Peters Creek Baptist Church began in 2021 in response to a need in the community for the basic necessities of families in the area. Today, it serves well over 100 families and is committed to assisting families in the South Hills who have small children or who are caregivers for the elderly and are experiencing diaper insecurity. The Diaper Pantry is funded fully through private donations and operated solely by volunteers.

PT REC

The Peters Township recreation department is accepting online registration at www.peterstownship.com for the following programs:

Fire Safety Day Camp from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 5-6 for ages 7 to 13 at the fire department station located at 245 E. McMurray Rd. Fee is $30 ($45 non-residents). Space is limited.

Jiu Jitsu for ages 7 to 15 from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. Mondays. Fee is $120 ($180 nonmembers).

Card Making Classes for adults, 18 and over, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays beginning Aug. 24. Fee is $35 ($53 nonmembers).

Session 4 of Dance It Out. Classes are offered from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. Mondays or 9 to 10 a.m. Thursdays. Fee is $50 ($75 nonmembers).

Ladies Night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. July 30. Participants will make a farmhouse-style floral pocket using a cutting board and a recycled can they have brought from home. Fee is $15 ($20 nonmembers).

Volleyball camps for intermediates from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. and from Aug. 10-13 and 3 to 4:15 p.m. Aug. 17-20. An advanced camp runs from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 17-20. Ages 9 to 16 are eligible. Fee is $75 ($112 nonmembers).

Guitar lessons for ages 6 to 12 from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Mondays and for ages 18 and over from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. beginning July 6 at the Peterswood Park outdoor amphitheater. Fee is $115 ($173 nonmembers).

Pickleball instruction is offered for six weeks for ages 18 and over beginning July 6 and 7. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday sessions are offered from 9 to 10 a.m. for the B1 course that focuses on strokes, rules and court fundamentals and teaches the basics of the game. The B2 course, which reinforces skills through cooperative drills and repetitions as well as focuses on situational play and practice, runs from 10 to 11 a.m. Mondays and Tuesdays. Fee is $120 ($180 nonmembers).

AMERICA 250

Woodville Celebrates America 250 will be presented from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 25 at the national historic landmark, located at 1375 Washington Pike in Collier.

The event is free to the public and includes house tours, live music, food truck (Burgh Bites), whiskey tasting and sales, cooking, gardening and 18th-century game demonstrations, Wayne’s Legion and displays from local historic organizations.

FITNESS

A faith & fitness class will be offered at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper St. Clair.

Classes are held from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. Monday, July 20, and 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15. Designed to move the body, lift the spirit and strengthen faith, the free classes feature easy-to-follow fitness movements set to contemporary Christian music. No dance experience necessary.

A senior carnival will be held at 1 p.m. July 21 at Chabad of the South Hills at 1701 McFarland Road. In addition to a picnic-style lunch, there will be a discussion on Home Care vs. Home Health Care as well as yoga and interactive games. Suggested donation is $5.

FLEA MARKETS

The Labouré Ladies Guild of St. Catherine Labouré Parish will hold its annual flea market “Timeless Treasures” with an extra day this year. The sale will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 16 and 17 as well as from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 18 at St. Louise DeMarillac Church in the LeGras Parish Center (lower level), 320 McMurray Road.

Sale items will include jewelry, gently used children’s clothing to size 6, toys, decorative items, knick knacks, kitchen items, holiday decorations, linens, tools, books, some furniture and much more. There will also be a boutique offering better quality items.

Due to fire restrictions, strollers are not permitted inside LeGras Parish Center.

The Church of the Atonement will hold a flea market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 18 on the lawn located at 618 Washington Ave. in Carnegie.

Vendors are needed to sell crafts and other flea market items.

PILATES

CONCERTS

The New Vintage Big Band will be featured at 2:30 p.m. July 19 in the auditorium of the Bethel Park Community Center.

The concert is one in the Dean Streator Summer Concert Series, sponsored by the Bethel Park Community Foundation. Other acts and dates are: Aug. 2 — Allegheny Brass Band; Aug. 9 — Pittsburgh Banjo Club; and Aug. 16 — Keystone Chorus featuring barbershop harmonies and singalongs.

The Bethel Park Lions Club will hold a book sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 31 at Lions Park located at 5757 Irishtown Road. From 5 to 6 p.m. patrons can fill a bag for $5.

FESTIVAL

The second annual South Hills Jewish Festival, celebrating Jewish life and culture, will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 2 at Chabad of the South Hills location at 1700 Bower Hill Road.

In addition to cultural crafts, kosher wine tasting and food, a petting zoo and fun zone, there will be a live concert with Berel Faiden.

PONY CAMP

A pony camp for beginner riders, ages 5 to 10, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 10-13 at Horses Unlimited Stables in South Park on Stoltz Road. All new campers will receive a complimentary Horse Care Kit for use during camp and afterward. Campers learn how to care for, groom, tack up, and ride ponies.

CRAFTS

The Joy of Christmas craft show will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at St. Louise de Marillac School and LeGras Parish Center at 320 McMurray Road.

More than 100 artists and crafters will offer items for purchase. In addition to craft and 50/50 raffles, lunch, snacks and baked goods will be available for purchase.

Admission is $2 and includes a ticket for the craft raffle.

Strollers are not permitted inside the show.

A household hazardous waste recycling event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 1 in the Bethel Park High School stadium parking lot.

CATS

Bailey’s Cat Haven will host an open house from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 1 at its South Park location on 2650 Brownsville Road.

The event features tours of the shelter, cat-related items for sale and a basket raffle. Pinnacle Tattoo (cash only) will be on site and is donating a portion of its proceeds to Bailey’s Cat Haven, which is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to cat care and socialization.

HEALTHY EATING

The South Hills chapter of Plant-Based Pittsburgh meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. every third Monday at the Sunnyhill Unitarian Universalist Church on Washington Road in Mt. Lebanon.

Plant-Based Pittsburgh is a non-profit organization that promotes healthy nutrition and living through a whole foods plant-based lifestyle.

Penn Woods Classical Academy will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence through an immersive four-day summer camp experience taking place from 9 a.m. to noon July 13-16.

Designed to bring history to life, the camp will immerse first- through seventh-grade students in the people, events, and daily life of the American Revolutionary War through hands-on activities, crafts, games, and historical experiences. Each day of camp will feature a Revolutionary-era theme such as: becoming a signer of the Declaration of Independence Day where students will create their own signature, participate in ink and quill writing, complete a scavenger hunt, and take part in a mock Continental Congress debate; learn military drills, make hardtack and stew, and more.
