FESTIVAL

The South Hills Jewish Festival will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 2 at 1700 Bower Hill Rd.

There will be a live concert with Chasidic singer Berel Faiden,cultural crafts, petting zoo, inflatables, magic show, Jewish book sale, lawn games. There will be kosher wine and food for sale.

GARDEN CLUB

The Giant Oaks Garden Club will meet Aug. 6 at St. David’s Episcopal Church located at 905 McMurray Rd. Lunch and meeting are held at 11:15 a.m. Program follows at 1 p.m. Master gardener Martha Swiss will discuss perennials. The luncheon fee is $6 for guests. NATURE WALK

A nature walk for ages 55 and over will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Aug. 4 at Peters Lake Park. There is no cost but registration deadline is Aug. 3. Visit www.peterstownship.com for more details.

NIGHT OUT

National Night Out in Bethel Park will have a new location. It will be held at the community center’s lower parking lot, located on Park Avenue. The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 4.

Established in 1984, the annual event is a nationwide community-building campaign designed to promote police-community partnerships, enhance neighborhood camaraderie, and foster safer, more caring environments.

In addition to free snacks, music, children’s activities, search and rescue dogs, emergency vehicle display, free raffles and youth ID kits, the Pirate Parrot will make a guest appearance. There will also be a flyover by the Pennsylvania State Police Helicopter.

FISHING

A fishing derby will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 15 at Peters Lake Park located at 560 Center Church Rd. Ages 4 to 11 can participate. Fee is $5 ($8 nonresidents). Space is limited. ROAD TRIP

The Peters Township recreation department has extended the deadline for its bus trip to Amish Country in Ohio. The registration deadline is now Aug. 16.

The day trip exploring the Amish and Mennonite culture and history will be held Sept. 17. Departure and return times are 6:45 a.m. and 8 p.m. approximately. Fee is $210 and includes transportation, a family-style Amish lunch, admissions per itinerary, step on guide and taxes.

Included in the adventure is a visit to Sugarcreek’s Cuckoo Clock Hills Museum, Swiss Village bulk food store and Breitenbach Winery for tastings and local shopping.

SF DAY

The South Fayette community day will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 22 at Fairview Park.

MAD SCIENCE

The Fizz Boom Bang Camp, offered through Mad Science, will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 3 to 7 at the Peters Township recreation center located at 700 Meredith Dr. Grades 1 through 6 are eligible. A similar course will also be held in Mt. Lebanon from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 10-14 at the recreation center, located at 900 Cedar Blvd.

Additionally, the Forces and Flight Camp will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 10-14.

Fee is $179 ($189 nonresidents) for each camp. For those attending both camps a lunch period will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Students should pack a nut-free lunch, two snacks and a water bottle. Comfortable footwear should be worn for the play period.

FIRE CAMP

A fire safety day camp will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 5 and 6 at the Peters Township Fire Department’s Station No. 1 located at 245 E. McMurray Road. Ages 7 to 13 are eligible to attend.

Fee is $30 ($45 nonresidents).

Participants will learn fire safety as well as handle fire and rescue equipment.

POOL PARTY

Club Lebo will host a back-to-school pool party from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Mt. Lebanon Outdoor Swim Center. Fee is $8.

There will be no pay-at-the-door line. Only pre-registered students in grades six through eight will be admitted. Sign up online at mt.lebanon.org by 7 p.m. Aug. 5.

COIN CLUB

The South Hills Coin Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Bethel Park municipal building located at 5100 West Library Ave. All members and the general public can attend. This month’s program will be on special edition coins and currency. A 50/50 will be held and children’s prizes will be awarded .

HELP WANTED

Volunteers are needed to help with the Peters Township Haunted Trail. A meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 10 at the recreation center for all those willing to help. High school students and adults are needed to narrate the story and lead groups through the trail. Scene actors, ages 13 and over, are needed for the tableaus and displays.

Follow-up meetings will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 8, 23 and 30 (for a final walkthrough). A meeting at a time to be determined will also be held on Sept. 16.

The haunted trail event runs from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Oct. 2 and 5:30 to 10 p.m. Oct. 3.

FALL SOCCER

CONCERTS

Peters Township concerts are again being held at the Peterswood Park amphitheater this summer. Concerts start at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted on Wednesdays and food trucks will be on site.

Remaining shows are Dancing Queen on Aug. 5; The Delaneys on Aug. 12; Street Level (6 p.m.) on Aug. 19; and Desperado: Eagles Tribute Band (6 p.m.) on Aug. 26.

Special events include: Lilo and Stitch on Aug. 7; Wild World of Animals (6:30 p.m.) on Sept. 2, and Hocus Pocus on Oct. 9.

Beer and wine are permitted and available for purchase at concerts only.

CONCERTS

The Pittsburgh Banjo Club will be featured at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 9 in the auditorium of the Bethel Park Community Center.

The concert is one in the Dean Streator Summer Concert Series, sponsored by the Bethel Park Community Foundation. On Aug. 16, Keystone Chorus will perform barbershop harmonies and singalongs.

Admission is free. Doors open at 1:30. Parking is limited.

CAR SHOW

The First Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon located at 501 Fayette Avenue in Rostraver Township will hold its annual car truck and motorcycle show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 15. Admission is free to the general public. A $5 fee per vehicle will be charged. Food will be available for purchase.

PT REC

The Peters Township recreation department is accepting online registration at www.peterstownship.com for the following programs:

Chess camp for ages 5 to 12, from 2 to 5 p.m. Aug. 10 to 14. Fee is $170 ($225 nonmembers).

Card Making Classes for adults, 18 and over, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays beginning Aug. 24. Fee is $35 ($53 nonmembers).

Session 4 of Dance It Out. Classes are offered from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. Mondays or 9 to 10 a.m. Thursdays. Fee is $50 ($75 nonmembers).

Ladies Night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. July 30. Participants will make a farmhouse-style floral pocket using a cutting board and a recycled can they have brought from home. Fee is $15 ($20 nonmembers).

Volleyball camps for intermediates from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. and from Aug. 10-13 and 3 to 4:15 p.m. Aug. 17-20. An advanced camp runs from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 17-20. Ages 9 to 16 are eligible. Fee is $75 ($112 nonmembers).

Guitar lessons for ages 6 to 12 from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Mondays and for ages 18 and over from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. beginning July 6 at the Peterswood Park outdoor amphitheater. Fee is $115 ($173 nonmembers).

Pickleball instruction is offered for six weeks for ages 18 and over beginning July 6 and 7. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday sessions are offered from 9 to 10 a.m. for the B1 course that focuses on strokes, rules and court fundamentals and teaches the basics of the game. The B2 course, which reinforces skills through cooperative drills and repetitions as well as focuses on situational play and practice, runs from 10 to 11 a.m. Mondays and Tuesdays. Fee is $120 ($180 nonmembers).

PONY CAMP

A pony camp for beginner riders, ages 5 to 10, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 10-13 at Horses Unlimited Stables in South Park on Stoltz Road. All new campers will receive a complimentary Horse Care Kit for use during camp and afterward. Campers learn how to care for, groom, tack up, and ride ponies.

FITNESS

A faith & fitness class will be offered at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper St. Clair.

Classes are held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15. Designed to move the body, lift the spirit and strengthen faith, the free classes feature easy-to-follow fitness movements set to contemporary Christian music. No dance experience necessary.

REUNION

The South Park High School’s Class of ’76 will hold its 50th reunion Aug. 21 at the Cottage, located at the South Park Fairgrounds, near the clock building. The picnic begins at noon. CAMPING

A father-son campout will be held Sept. 19 and 20 in Bird Park, located off Cedar Boulevard in Mt. Lebanon. Rain date is Sept. 26-27.

Boys in kindergarten through fifth grade accompanied by a male family companion can participate.

CRAFTS

The South Park Women’s Club’s 32nd annual craft show will be held Oct. 10 at the Broughton Fire Hall and the group is seeking “unique” crafters and vendors for the event, which features a variety of homemade items as well as offers refreshments, a bake sale, auction and raffle baskets.

Applications are being accepted for John McMillan Presbyterian Church’s annual Christmas Affair.

Space is limited for the event scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 7 at 875 Clifton Road, Bethel Park.

Each year, more than 50 artisans showcase a wide variety of handmade goods and holiday gifts at the event, which also includes a festive Gingerbread House, chance auction and the Kris Kringle Kafé. Admission is free.

Admission is $2 and includes a ticket for the craft raffle.

Strollers are not permitted inside the show.

HEALTHY EATING

The South Hills chapter of Plant-Based Pittsburgh meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. every third Monday at the Sunnyhill Unitarian Universalist Church on Washington Road in Mt. Lebanon.

Plant-Based Pittsburgh is a non-profit organization that promotes healthy nutrition and living through a whole foods plant-based lifestyle.

The group will host a potluck on July 15 and host a special guest speaker on July 20.
