Scouts achieve rank of Eagle

Jack Ryan Jones and Shane Thomas Bauer of Troop 23 were recognized for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout during a ceremony held at Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church on June 30. Jack’s Eagle Project consisted of renovating an existing Veteran’s Memorial in Carnegie, which had fallen into disarray over the years. Jack’s team power-washed the monument and persuaded the borough to replace the dilapidated sidewalk. All vegetation was removed including a dying tree, grass, weeds and mulch. A brick landscaping border and two benches were put in place. In addition, a flag pole with solar night lighting was installed. Shane’s Eagle Project involved working to revitalize the historic Hollywood Theater in Dormont. The handicap restroom was updated with a new vinyl floor, walls were painted and a new light fixture was installed. Two new sets of soundproof doors for the balcony entry points were purchased, stained and installed. In addition, the basement storage and prop area was also cleaned and worked on. Eugene Eckman, leading knight from the B.P.O.E. Pittsburgh South Hills Lodge 2213, presented both young men with two framed awards — one from the local lodge in Bethel Park and one from the B.P.O.E. Grand Lodge in Chicago. He also delivered a personal note from the Elk’s national leader, Malcolm J. McPherson Jr., to each of the new Eagles.
