Lebo duo compete

Mt. Lebanon’s Golda Gershanok and Katherine Izzo competed in the WPIAL singles tennis championships held Oct. 12-13 at North Allegheny High School. Though the duo did not advance to the PIAA tournament the pair have combined their talents for the WPIAL doubles tournament, being held this week.

Gershanok, who finished runner-up in the Section 4 singles tournament held at Glen Creek, reached the quarterfinals of the district championships. She dropped a 10-0 decision to Ava Catzanzarite. The North Allegheny netter finished runner-up to Maria Santilli, who successfully defending her WPIAL title. Santilli of Norwin swept the finals against Catzanzarite, 6-4, 6-2.

Izzo was eliminated from the WPIAL singles, falling to Charlotte James of Fox Chapel, 10-1, in the opening round of action. Izzo was the third-place finisher in Section 4, having triumphed over Kara Joseph of Chartiers Valley, 6-3, 7-5, in the consolation match.

Other local section competitors included: Mia Hofbauer and Carla Goldsmith from Peters Township as well as Anna Rush and Fallon Winseck from Upper St. Clair.

The WPIAL doubles championships are set for Oct. 19-20 at North Allegheny High School.
