McMurray scouts earn Eagle ranking

An Eagle Court of Honor was held July 10 by Boy Scout Troop 1393 at the Crossroads Church of Christ in McMurray. Evan Gourley and Richard Malstrom were recognized by friends and relatives for achieving this highest rank of the Boy Scouts. The new Eagles received letters of recognition from national, state and local leaders, acknowledging their effort and success.
Attending and representing the B.P.O.E. was Eugene Eckman, leading knight of the Pittsburgh South Hills Lodge 2213 in Bethel Park. He presented the new Eagles with two framed certificates each, one from the local lodge and one from the Grand Lodge in Chicago. He also gave each a personal U.S. flag and a small gold pin representing the 80-plus year relationship between the two organizations.
Richard’s Eagle project, which benefited the Hillcrest Christian Academy, was to build a 12-foot by 20-foot greenhouse, complete with a gravel floor and four planting tables. This project will enhance the school’s science program and food produced will be donated to local food banks. Evan’s project benefited the Canonsburg Armory. His team renovated an existing bathroom and party room. They tore out existing toilets and stalls in the bathroom and created a new “family” bathroom. They also laid a new tile floor and repainted. In the party room, they painted the floor and walls, and assembled and installed new cabinets, countertops and sink.
