Haute couture or haunt couture?

2 min read

That occasional Sunday bike ride along the Montour Trail will never be the same after reading Deana Carpenter’s story about paranormal investigations in this edition of South Hills Living.

While I can’t say I’ve ever had any encounters with the unexplained, there is something just a teensy bit unsettling about the history of Bell’s Tunnel – or “Hell’s Tunnel,” as it is sometimes called – near the trail. Deana talks with some paranormal investigators about some local “haunt” spots, including Montour Trail.

The former rail line apparently was the site of a tragic train accident in the late 1800s or early 1900s. A train broke down, prompting passengers to disembark and huddle in the tunnel, only to be killed by another oncoming locomotive. Among the unusual sightings in the area today include the apparition of a little girl in a white dress and a man with green eyes and a white glowing hand.

Folklore or not, the story certainly makes for interesting conversation during a leisurely fall afternoon stroll on the trail.

Or, you can always chat about adding a pop of color to your fall garden. In this edition of the magazine, Terri Johnson offers some suggestions to keep your landscape alive with beautiful shades of red, orange, purple and pink by incorporating chrysanthemums, asters and verbena, to name just a few fall plants.

If it’s your fall wardrobe that’s in need of freshening, Allison Duratz tracked down the latest craze to sweep the nation: fashion trucks, and they’re motoring to a location near you. She shares the stories of Samantha Lugo, Jackee Ging and Cailey Breneman – area entrepreneurs whose boutiques on wheels are delivering fashions in a convenient and fun way.

No matter what your passion – gardening, shopping or walking – we have it all in this fall edition of South Hills Living.

Just keep an eye out for little girls in white dresses …

And happy Halloween!

Liz Rogers is editor of the Observer-Reporter and Living in Washington County magazine. South Hills Living Editor Katie Green will return in the December-January edition.
