Peters Township boys off to fast start on the links

Peters Township placed four golfers in the Top Six and coasted to victory in the Tri-County Athletic Director’s Association (TRICADA) Championships played Aug. 14 at the Nemacolin Country Club.

The Indians followed up that showing by taking the title at the Jerry Roman Memorial Chairman’s Cup played Aug. 17 at Cedarbrook Golf Course.

Caden Benson led the charge at TRICADA as the Indians carded a 376 to win the event by 36 strokes over second-place Canon-McMillan. Trinity took third with a 414 score while Peters Township’s White team followed in fourth (415) and South Fayette finished fifth (421)

Benson claimed medalist honors. He shot par (72) on the 6,307-yard course.

Tyler Ondrejko, Jackson Baxter and Kaden Holleran filled in at places four, five and sixth. Ondrejko carded a 75 while Baxter and Holleran were among six golfers to post a 76 score.

Camden Reyes followed with a 77 for the winning team. He was West Penn Open junior champion earlier this summer.

John Blackwell also played for the Red team.

Ty Wood led the White squad with a 79. Other competitors for the White team included: Braden Merck (80), Brady Heisler (83), Brendan McCloskey (86), David Beltz (87) and Brady Walker (88).

Hudson Vennum posted the low score of 78 for South Fayette. Also helping the Lions to their fifth-place finish were: Dylan Morford (83), Colton Devlin (84), Will Scanlon (86) and Rocco Matusic (90). Aiden Lyons also played for the Lions.

In winning the Chairman’s Cup, the Indians took the Class 3A team title with a 380 score, 13 strokes ahead of runner-up Bethel Park (393). South Fayette finished third with a 400 team score.

Holleran (74), John Blackwell (76) and Benson (76) led the Indians and all placed in the Top 10 among finishers in both the 3A and 2A division.

Others who contributed to PT’s team score were Benson with a 76 and Ondrejko with a 77. Reyes rounded out the team’s top six golfers.

Joey Boff submitted the best score for the Black Hawks. He shot a 74 on the 72 par, 6,824-yard Gold Course.

Other top performers for Bethel Park were: Marco Wetzel and Tyler Collins with 79s as well as Parker Benjamin (80 and Cooper Biagini (81). Jackson Popp also participated for the Black Hawks.

Hudson Vennum from South Fayette took medalist runner-up honors. His 73 was two strokes off the winning pace set by Drew Marling from John Marshall. Marling shot a one-under-par 71.

Other top performers for the Lions were Will Scanlon (77), Aiden Lyons (83), Colton Devlin (83) and Dylan Morford (84). Rocco Matusic also shot an 84 but his score did not count toward the team’s total.

Peters Township also won the Chairman’s Cup’s junior varsity team title. The Indians beat South Fayette, 400-431, for first place. Central Dauphin (448) and Bethel Park (458) followed in third and fourth place.

Ty Wood took medalist honors with a 76 and led a parade of Indians to the podium.

Chris Opitz secured second place with a 77 and Brady Walker grabbed third with a 78.

Brendan McCloskey tied South Fayette’s Mason Leh for fourth place. Both carded 83s.

South Fayette’s Maks Klemick followed tied for sixth place with Central Dauphin’s Gabe Vecchio. Each submitted 84 scores.

While the two opening tournaments were 18-hole events for the Indians, their section matches during the regular season are limited to nine holes. Peters Township opened league play on Aug. 19 against Baldwin at Valley Brook Country Club.

Peters Township and all WPIAL clubs and individuals will play 18-hole events during playoff and championship action.

The WPIAL team championships are scheduled for Oct. 13 at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Belle Vernon while the PIAA finals will be held Oct. 21 at Penn State. The WPIAL Class 3A individual championships will be played over two days. The first round will be played Sept. 28 at Hannastown Country Club. The final round is scheduled for Oct. 7 at Sewickley Heights Country Club.

GIRLS WIN

In girls golf, Peters Township captured the Class 3A team title during the Jerry Roman Memorial Chairman’s Cup played Aug. 17 at Cedarbrook Golf Course.

The Lady Indians edged runner-up South Fayette by seven strokes, 327-334, to secure the championship trophy. Bethel Park also participated in the six-team event and posted a 433 team score.

While Angela Yao of Morgantown claimed medalist honors with a 73 and Gabby Filia from Westmont Hilltop finished runner-up with a 75, Betty Glyptis led the Lady Indians, taking third place with a 79 score on the 5,547-yard Red Course.

Annie Higgins also finished in the Top 7 for Peters Township. She placed sixth with an 80.

Other top performers for the Lady Indians were Josie Jeglinski (82) and Olivia Ondrejko (86). Autumn Merck also participated in the event, carding an 88.

Olivia Valentino and Emma Nickolas submitted the low scores for the Lady Lions. Both finished with 80 totals.

Alianna Billings (82) and Brynna Lauer (92) also contributed to South Fayette’s final score. Vanessa Kushner also competed in the match.

For the Lady Hawks, Kaylee Kreigline was the top finisher with a 91. Other performers for Bethel Park included: Kaylee Gastgeb, Adrienne Hofbauer, Nora Pearl and Alexis Klutch.

The WPIAL team championships will again be played at Cedarbrook Golf Course on Oct. 13. The PIAA team finals are set for Oct. 21 at Penn State.

Peters Township is the defending WPIAL Class 3A team champions.

The girls individual championships will again be divided into two rounds with the first being played Sept. 28-30 for both classifications at sites to be determined. The Class 3A and 2A finals will be played Oct. 5-7 at Valley Brook Country Club. The PIAA finals are set for Oct. 19-20 at Penn State.
