So you want to be an Olympian

John Henry Krueger of McMurray recently qualified for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games to be held Feb. 9-25 in Korea. He is America’s fastest short-track speed skater in the distance events, 500, 1,000 and 1,500 meters.

The 22-year-old skater offered this advice to those interested in getting involved in the sport and hoping to emulate him and become an Olympian, too.

“Make sure you love it,” said the son of Heidi and Bryan Krueger.

The sport, he says, is something one can’t do halfway. It requires a lot of sacrifice.

“You really have to have your heart in it,” he said. Everybody wants to be the best and as long as you are making sure that that’s what you are doing, to be the best you possibly can, then I think you have a place in any Olympic sport.”

He added that when your ultimate dream comes true, as his has, you will realize it has all been worth it.

But, he reminds aspiring athletes that they must believe.

“No dream is impossible,” he said.
