No. 1 faces No. 2 at Highmark Stadium this weekend as Peters Township (17-0-1) battles North Allegheny (18-2-1) for the WPIAL Class Quad-A boys’ soccer title.

While the Tigers thumped Canon-McMillan, 9-0, to reach the finals, the Indians dispatched Pine-Richland, 4-1, in a semifinal game played Oct. 28 at West Allegheny.

Luke Kelly, Bryce Gabelhart, Nate Lopus and Brian Bruzdewicz tallied the goals. Logan Brinsky chalked up two assists. Gabelhart and Bruzdewicz also collected assists.

The Indians and Tigers faced each other earlier this season with Peters Township recording a 2-1 win back on Sept. 9

The victory came on the heels of a 4-1 win against Butler in the quarterfinals.

Tyler Opferman and Brinsky racked up two goals each. Gabelhart, Matt Stuck, Opferman and Kelly assisted.

In Class AAA boys’ action, South Fayette moved into a consolation contest with Chartiers Valley after both teams dropped their semifinal matches. The game to decide the final PIAA playoff spot in Class AAA was set for 8 p.m. Nov. 1 at Moon.

While CV lost to Montour, 2-1, the Lions lost to West Allegheny, 3-2, in double overtime of a semifinal game played at North Allegheny. Goals from Jared Renz and Chad Eldridge afforded South Fayette a 2-0 advantage before the Indians scored twice in the final 26 minutes of regulation to force overtime.

Seton LaSalle also lost its bid to reach the WPIAL finals when it lost to Springdale, 2-1, in double overtime of a Class 1-A boys’ semifinal game at North Allegheny. The Rebels will play Winchester Thurston on Nov. 1 in the consolation contest to determine the final PIAA berth.

In girls’ soccer action, Upper St. Clair edged Peters Township, 1-0, on a goal from Jane Madson. Nikki Gibbons assisted the first-half tally. Jill Rocco recorded the shutout in the nets.

The win advanced the Panthers to the Final Four but they lost their bid to reach Highmark Stadium for the finals when they dropped a 2-1 decision to Penn-Trafford on Oct. 30 at Fox Chapel.

Madson scored the lone tally for USC, which has a chance to qualify for the PIAA playoffs when they battle North Allegheny in the WPIAL consolation contest Nov. 1.

The USC boys bowed out of the Quad-A tournament with a 1-0 loss to North Allegheny.

In other girls’ action, Seton LaSalle battled Shady Side Academy for a spot in the WPIAL Class 1-A final. The Rebels lost, 4-0. SLS, however, can qualify for the PIAA tournament if it beats North Catholic in the WPIAL consolation game set for Nov. 1.
