Sabrina Tatalias of Bethel Park and Sam Trehy of Keystone Oaks High School will be honored along with Arlen Hooks of Baldwin on June 22 at the South Hills Country Club. All three recent high school graduates will receive their awards as George Benson Scholarship recipients.

The awards are given annually by the membership of South Hills Country Club. The total value of the 2018 Scholarships is $24,000 over the next four years, bringing the total committed to $101,000 since the program was established in 2012.

A graduate of Brentwood High School and Duke University, Benson was a distinguished captain in the Air Force, a successful South Hills businessman, and an inspiration to those whose lives he touched. But many remember him most for his lifelong passion for the game of golf. His many titles included the West Penn Amateur, and more than 20 club championships in the US and England.

As befits his love of golf, The George Benson Scholarship is open to students who are a senior at a qualified local high school or attending a 4-year college and have demonstrated a connection to the game of golf through their athletic achievement, academic interest or employment. Applicants are evaluated on the basis of character, financial need, academic performance and extracurricular activities.

Tatalias earned a 4.1 GPA at Bethel Park, while accumulating more than 350 hours of community service. She also earned the Girl Scout Gold Award. She was heavily involved in extra-curricular activities, including: Chapter President of DECA (an international organization of high school and college business students); National Honor Society; participant in a US Navy sponsored underwater robot-building competition; captain of the varsity cheerleading squad. Tatalias has been a caddie at South Hills Country Club since 2013. This fall, she will major in information technology at Point Park University.

Trehy graduated with a 4.3 GPA from Keystone Oaks. He played three years on the golf team and four years on the tennis squad. He served as golf captain in his senior year and tennis captain in both his junior and senior years. He was active in the school drama program, elected vice president of his senior class, and volunteered with the Rachel Carson Conservancy.

Trehy will attend Ohio University this fall. He will major in civil and mechanical engineering.

Hooks was a standout performer on the Baldwin track and field team. He earned four varsity letters while maintaining a 4.3 GPA. He was a National Honor Society member, a Ben Carson Scholar, and voted by his classmates to receive the “Do the Right Thing Award”.

A caddie at South Hills Country Club since 2014, Hooks will attend Notre Dame in the fall and major in political science and criminal justice.

The ninth annual George Benson Classic golf tournament, sponsored by Benson Lincoln, will be held June 22 at the South Hills Country Club. The tournament is the primary source of funding for the scholarship awards. In addition to golf, tee sponsorships were sold to area businesses, and there are silent and live auctions for a number of prizes.

The Classic is a “Pro-Am” format. Twenty-five foursomes will each be joined by one of the top-ranked Tri-State PGA golf professionals. The pros will compete for a total purse of $12,000, which is the largest single day purse of the Tri-State season.
