Canevin advances
Bishop Canevin (22-4) defeated Everett, 46-39, in the game played prior to the BP-State College contest at Central Cambria.
With the win, the Lady Crusaders advanced to play Mohawk (21-5) in the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class 3A tournament.
In the victory, Bri Allen exploded for 19 points. Shamyjha Price followed with 12 tallies.
Lions eliminated
In the PIAA Class 4A boys’ tournament, South Fayette succumbed to New Castle, 61-41, at Aliquippa. It was the second meeting within two weeks for the teams as the Hurricanes defeated the Lions on the way to capturing the WPIAL title.
With the loss, the Lions finished 17-9 overall.
The Hurricanes (23-4) polished off the Lions with a strong start and a fantastic finish. They constructed a 10-point lead after one quarter and outscored South Fayette, 22-9, in the final frame.
New Castle also shot well. The ‘Canes converted 60 percent of their shots (26-for-43) while the Lions went 17 of 47 from the field for a conversion rate of 36 percent.
In defeat, Noah Plack fired in 13 points. Tim Locher pitched in 11 markers.
For the ‘Canes, Marcus Hooker registered a double-double. He scored 15 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. He also dished up five assists. George Eggleston fired in a game-high 17 points.
