USC upends PT

Upper St. Clair defeated Peters Township, 2-1, on Oct. 1 in Section 4-AAAA girls’ soccer action.

The Lady Panthers scored twice in the first half on goals from Jane Madson and Landy Mertz to take a 2-0 lead. Emily Rocco crossed the ball in front of the net for Mertz.

Ten minutes into the second half, however, Regan LaVigna narrowed the gap with a tally but the Indians could pull no closer. Natalie Daube assisted on the goal.

Juls Gianni secured the win in net for USC, which improved to 6-3 in the section and 7-3 overall. PT fell to 7-2 in the division and 9-2 overall.

After visits to Brashear and Mt. Lebanon this week, Peters Township hosts Moon on Oct. 8 in what shapes up to be the battle for the section title. The Tigers were 6-1-2 in the division and 8-1-2 overall heading into their game against Canon-McMillan on Oct. 1.

Field hockey

Peters Township defeated Penn-Trafford, 5-2, and blanked Taylor Allderdice, 6-0, in field hockey action. Maura Farinelli finished with the hat trick in each victory. Lexi Lawrence and Nica Schratz added one goal in each of the victories. Greta Schratz supplied the other tally in the win against the Dragons.

PT golf

Andrew Poon fired a 39 to lead Peters Township (14-2, 8-2) to victory, 204, 237, against Trinity in Section 7 boys’ golf action. Parker Johnson, Christian Schreiber and Ryan Marshall all carded 41s while Ellian Ascencio added a 42 to complete the Indians’ scoring.

Top netters

Western Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association recognized Jill Yeates of Peters Township and Aubrey Hetland from South Fayette as Athletes of the Week for Week 5 of the season.

A senior defensive specialist, Yeates shared the honor as Quad-A standout with junior setter Morgan Galligan from Canon-McMillan and junior middle hitter Mekayla Dedo from Penn-Trafford.

A senior setter, Hetland has helped South Fayette to a Top 10 ranking in Class AAA. The Lions are rated No. 6 just behind Chartiers Valley. Knoch owns the top spot in the division.

In Quad-A, Bethel Park and Canon-Mac are ranked No. 5 and No. 9 respectively with North Allegheny, Baldwin and Oakland Catholic controlling the top three slots.

In Class AA, Seton-La Salle is ranked No. 6 while Bishop Canevin tops the Class A standings.

Hockey school

Registration begins Oct. 5 for the Fall II Mt. Lebanon Hockey School and the Developmental League.

Applications are being accepted online at www.mtlebanon.org or by calling 412-561-4363. Fee is $112 for the seven-week programs.

Ages 4-12 are eligible for the hockey school, which offers new and innovated concepts based on the philosophy that hockey should be fun.All ability levels can participate and learn the skills of the game in a progressive, non-pressure atmosphere. Classes are small and taught by P.S.A. Skating Professionals and certified USA Hockey Instructors. Weekly scrimmages are featured. Classes begin Oct. 30 and Nov. 1.

The developmental program is a noncompetitive and “no-check” league. Skaters are divided into two age groups: 5-8 and 9-12. Equal ice time is guaranteed. To insure balanced teams, registration is accepted on an individual basis, with each player rating himself/herself. Full equipment is required. Games begin Nov. 2.
