USC boots PT

Despite two goals by Peters Township’s David Phillips, Upper St. Clair defeated the Indians 4-2 in the Section 2-AAAA opener. USC broke open the match in the second half after it was tied, 1-1, at halftime.

Ben Burlovic scored twice for the Panthers. Mitch Friday, Zach Shoemaker and Zachery Ioli registered the assists.

Dylan Mira struck first, giving USC a 1-0 lead early in the contest. Shoemaker assisted.

Abelardo Sobrarzo lifted the Panthers into the lead, 2-1. Ioli assisted.

PT downs USC

Parker Johnson fired a 1-over-par 37 from the blue tees at the Valley Brook Country Club and guided Peters Township to victory over rival Upper St. Clair, 196-211, in Section 7-AAA boys’ golf action.

Andrew Poon and Joe Pisarcik followed with 39s while Christian Schreiber and Mason Takacs finished with scores of 40 and 41 for the Indians, who improved to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the division.

Jack Urban shot a low-score of 39 to pace the Panthers, who fell to 4-2 in the section.

USC’s other top performers included: Nathan Piatt (42), Matthew Goldman (42), Josh Krakoff (44) and Scott Jordan (44).

The Indians suffered their first loss in the section when they dropped a 209-212 decision to South Fayette at Hickory Heights Golf Course.

SSA beats PT

Shadyside Academy defeated Peters Township in field hockey, 4-2.

Maura Farinelli and Nica Schratz scored goals in a losing cause for the Indians.

Abby Todd (2), Annabel Kuhn and Claire Taylor accounted for the goals for SSA.

Goalie challenge

The October Saves Goalie Challenge is in its fifth season of supporting breast and pediatric cancer research.

The challenge calls on any goalie– youth, amateur or professional–who plays for a hockey team, in an organization or club, to raise the most money through gathering pledges per save they make during the month of October.

The annual event has raised $515,000. This year’s goal is to raise $500,000 bringing the event’s grand total to $1 million.

Goalies can register at www.octobersaves.org beginning Sept. 15 to participate.
