Peters Township’s Wang wins section title

Kat Wang of Peters Township defeated Kara Joseph from Chartiers Valley, 6-1, 7-5, at Glen Creek and captured the Section 4-AAA singles tennis championship.
After receiving a first-round bye, Wang dispatched Nini Curcione of Montour, 10-0, and Upper St. Clair’s Bella Goldman, 10-1, to reach the Final Four. In the semifinals, Wang swept Lauren Masteller of Mt. Lebanon in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
To reach the finals, Joseph took advantage of a first-round bye then eliminated Marlaina Bozek of Trinity, 10-0, and Savannah Vetterly from South Fayette, 10-5, in her preliminary matches before beating Camilla Buch of Mt. Lebanon, 6-2, 6-0, in the semifinals.
In the third-place consolation match to decide who advances with the section champion and runner-up to the WPIAL championships to be held Sept. 20-21 at North Allegheny, Masteller won by injury default against Buch.
Other local netters competing in the Section 4 tournmaent included: Jamie Liu from South Fayette, Anna Rush from USC, Brianna Thompson from Canon-McMillan, Mia Hofbauer from Peters Township and Sowmya Talasila from Chartiers Valley.
Mia Gorman finished runner-up in the in Section 3 AAA tournament held over two days at Shady Side Academy and Fox Chapel. Bethany Yauch of Baldwin needed three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, to defeat the Bethel Park freshman in the championship match.
Gorman advanced to the finals with a 6-1, 6-2 win against SSA’s Elle Santora in the semifinals. She swept Emily Fera of Fox Chapel and Reilly Reis of Woodland Hills, 10-0, in the opening rounds of the tournament.
Gorman’s teammate, Jenna Chernicky participated in the sectional but lost to Oakland Catholic’s Amanda Santora, 10-8, in the second round of play.
The WPIAL doubles championships will be held Oct. 3-4 at North Allegheny. The Class AAA team tournament commences the week of Oct. 15.
