Upper St. Clair avenged one of its defeats this golf season and the Lady Panthers did so in record fashion when they defeated arch rival Mt. Lebanon, 161-170, on their home course at the St. Clair Country Club.

USC’s lowest score prior to the Sept. 14 match was 162.

“So we beat (the record) by one stroke,” explained USC skipper Michael Cuscino.

With the victory, the Lady Panthers raised their section mark to 4-1 overall. They are 5-2 overall with their other loss to North Allegheny.

USC plans to avenge that defeat during the team championships to be held Oct. 11 at Cedarbrook Golf Course.

Last fall, the Tigers won the girls’ team title with a 315 score. USC took third with a 366 score, nine strokes behind runner-up Fox Chapel (357).

“Our goal for this year is to win the WPIAL championship,” said Cuscino, “and to advance to states.”

Steadiness, not records, will enable the Lady Panthers to achieve their goals.

“Our biggest strength as a team is the depth we have,” Cuscino said. “Every girl on the team can consistently shoot in the mid to low 40s in any given match.”

Against Lebo, Sarah Eccher proved the most consistent. The junior earned medalist honors with a low-score of 36.

Juniors Sara Steve and Mary Groninger followed with 39s. Steve was USC’s low-scorer with an 84 during last year’s WPIAL final.

The Panthers benefited from the play of Tori Slagle as well. The freshman carded a 47 against the Blue Devils.

USC has also received reliable performances from senior Caroline Hendrix, freshman Bridget Boal, junior Gabi Spina and sophomore Caroline Wright this season.

In other girls’ golf action, Peters Township also defeated Lebo, 189-193, at Valley Brook Country Club.

Freshman Ella McRoberts carded a low score of 43 for the Lady Indians.

NOTE: The WPIAL Class AA and AAA girls’ individual championships will be held Oct. 3 at Diamond Run. Tee times start at 8:30 a.m.
