McRoberts leads list of girl qualifiers

Ella McRoberts headlines the list of local qualifiers for the WPIAL Class AAA girls’ golf championships to be held Oct. 3 at Diamond Run Golf Course in Sewickley.
The Peters Township sophomore tied Oakland Catholic’s Jessica Meyers for medalist honors during the Section 2-AAA girls’ championships held Sept. 19 at the Lindenwood Golf Club. Both golfers finished with 72 scores.
Allison Poon and Delaney Kern will join McRoberts in the championships. The Peters Township freshmen shot 78 and 81 respectively to finish fourth and eighth overall.
Upper St. Clair advanced three golfers to the finals. Sara Steve, a junior, finished fifth overall with a 78. Tori Slagle, a freshman, followed with an 81 and Caroline Hendrix, a senior, shot the target score of 87 to qualify.
Mt. Lebanon’s duo of Lindsey Powanda, a freshman, and Madison Bartone, a senior, shot 79 and 83 respectively to make the cut as well.
While Jamie Rush, a Canon-McMillan sophomore, shot an 81 to qualify individually, Caroline McConnell advanced out of the Section 1-AAA tournament. The South Fayette freshman carded a 75 at Strawberry Ridge Golf Club and finished fourth.
Because neither C-M nor SF has girls’ golf teams, Rush and McConnell play on the school’s boys’ squads. They competed individually in the section tournaments in an effort to qualify for the WPIAL championships.
Twenty-eight golfers in all qualified for the district finals, including Carolyn Wrigley, who led North Allegheny to the girls’ Class AAA team title last fall and has won the past two WPIAL individual titles, her teammate, Christina Lewis, and Pine-Richland’s Lauren Freyvogel, who edged both girls in the Section 1 final, firing a 71, two strokes ahead of the competition for the victory.
Piatt wins sectional
Nathan Piatt earned medalist honors during the Section 7-AAA championships. The Upper St. Clair junior carded a one-over-par 73 at the Lindenwood Golf Club.
While Ryan Marshall of Peters Township secured section runner-up honors with a 74, his teammate, Parker Johnson, tied Luke Lestini of South Fayette and USC’s Scott Jordan for third place. Each finished at 76.
Chartiers Valley’s Shane Bioni and PT’s Joe Pisarcik tied for sixth place with 78s while PT’s Christian Schreiber and SF’s James Cavrak tied for eight place with 80s.
PT’s Andrew Poon, Canon-McMillan’s Colin McKinney and USC’s Matthew Goldman completed the list of qualifiers out of Section 7 for the WPIAL semifinals. All are sophomores who carded 81 and 82s respectively.
Lebo trio advances
Mt. Lebanon advanced three boys to the WPIAL semifinals, which were held Sept. 25 (past deadline) at the Youghiogheny Country Club in McKeesport.
During the Section 6-AAA tournament played at Scenic Valley Golf Course, Hayden Mitchell fired a 76 while Myles Hamel and Charlie Lamendola both finished with 80s.
In the Section 9-AA tournament played at Allegheny Country Club, Nick Waskiewicz made the cut. The Seton-La Salle senior managed an 82.
The WPIAL Class AAA boys’ golf championships will be played Oct. 2 at Oakmont Country Club. The Class AA finals will be held Sept. 27 at the Allegheny Country Club.
