Doubles teams advance to WPIAL championships

Lauren Marsteller and Camilla Buch combined to win the Section 4-AAA tournament and advanced to the WPIAL doubles championships to be played Oct. 3-4 at North Allegheny High School.
The Mt. Lebanon duo defeated Upper St. Clair’s Anna Rush and Bella Goldman, 6-3, 6-1, in the championship match played at Bethel Park. Marsteller and Buch defeated Danni Gibbons and Gia Winseck, also from USC, 6-0, 6-1, in the semifinals.
After a first-round bye, Marsteller and Buch advanced to the Final Four with pro set wins of 10-0 against West Allegheny’s Madison Cunningham and Maddy Lean and 10-1 against Kara Joseph and Sommya Talasila from Chartiers Valley.
Rush and Goldman made their way to the finals with opening wins against Trinity’s Marlaina Bezek and Skylar Clawson, 10-0, Peters Township’s Nina DeRienzo and Baylee Sorrell, 10-8, and Lebo’s Bridget Zimmerman and Alexandra Renton, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals.
While all four top doubles teams moved on to the WPIAL championships, Gibbons and Winseck recovered from their semifinal loss to defeat Zimmerman and Renton, 6-1, 6-2, in the consolation match for third place.
Other local duos to compete in the Section 4-AAA tournament included: Kat Wang and Mia Hofbauer from Peters Township; Zipporah Rose and Vaishnari Vura as well as Savannah Vetterly and Jamie Liu from South Fayette; Katy Famar and Taylor Zanke from Canon-McMillan; and Brittany Galb and Elle Mack from Char-Valley.
In Section 3-AAA action, Bethel Park fielded two doubles teams in the tournament: Rachel Holt and Emma Petrick as well as Lauren Bader and Jenna Chernicky. Neither team advanced past the quarterfinals. The top four teams advanced to the WPIAL championships.
