Mt. Lebanon girls’ golfers shooting best scores in years

Pete Bouvy has coached hockey, softball and baseball, but the Mt. Lebanon High School mathematics teacher seems to have found his niche as the girls’ varsity golf coach. In his third season as the helm, he has his team poised for a run at a WPIAL title and two of his players prepared for the district individual championships this week.
While the Lady Blue Devils finished second in section play with an 8-2 record and clinched a spot in the WPIAL team semifinals set for Oct. 8 at Rolling Acres, Lindsey Powanda and Maddy Bartone have qualified for the WPIAL individual championships set for Oct. 3 at Diamond Run Golf Course in Sewickley.
“I expect Lindsey and Maddy to enjoy the experience and play their best,” Bouvy said of Lebo’s individual qualifiers. “I wouldn’t be surprised if at least one of them moved on to the PIAA championship round.”
As a freshman, Powanda has been putting up “spectacular numbers.” Bouvy noted her two-under-par 35 against arch rival Upper St. Clair. Powanda also fired a 39 to lead Lebo to victory, 182-216, against Bethel Park Sept. 26.
After non-section matches this week, Bouvy also expects the team to advance to the WPIAL team finals Oct. 11 at Cedar Brook Golf Course in Belle Vernon. The Lebo girls entered this week’s action with a 9-3 overall record.
“We hope to have a strong finish this week as we prepare for the team semifinals at Rolling Acres,” Bouvy said. “If everything comes together there, I think we have a chance to be one of the top four teams and move on to the finals.”
During the regular season, Lebo has been one of the top teams in the South Hills thanks to the phenomenal play of Powanda and the strength of the senior leadership provided by Bartone as well as Melissa Redding and Sydney Krauth.
