Despite losing to North Allegheny 3-0 in the WPIAL Class 6A consolation game at Washington & Jefferson College, Bethel Park did enjoy a successful spring in baseball.

The Hawks finished 15-5 overall, reaching the final four in the district’s largest classification. They also claimed their third title in four years in one of the toughest sections in the WPIAL.

In the loss to the Tigers, BP surrendered all three runs after a one-out error in the top of the first. After allowing three hits, Eric Chalus shut the Tigers down. He permitted no more hits and struck out 14.

BP, however, only managed two hits against Penn State recruit Ryan Patridge and Dayton prospect Anthony Hattrup. David Kessler smoked a single to right and Brandon Cole belted a ground-rule double to right-center field.

The Black Hawks graduate left fielder Anthony Strangis, outfielders Payten Miller and Alec McGill as well as pitchers Shane Clunan and Dalton Moore.

Strangis, who batted .309 with a .405 on-base percentage, earned All-Conference, second-team honors. He will attend the University of Pittsburgh along with fellow team captain Antonio Fontana.

Miller matriculates to West Virginia University, while Clunan heads to Duquesne University to play club baseball. McGill is headed to PSU-Altoona to play baseball while Moore will continue his career at Lackawanna Junior College.

BP returns two-time All-Conference players Sean McGowan in center field and Kevin Kogler at third base as well as two-year starters Brandon Cole behind the plate, Anthony Chiccitt at shortstop and Chalus.

First baseman Cooper Shoemaker, designated hitter and outfielder Kessler, second baseman Bo Conrad, outfielder Trevor Morrison and pitchers Josh Peters and Evan Bromley return to the Black Hawks’ starting line-up.

Seton wins title

Seton LaSalle (19-2) captured the WPIAL Class 2A title thanks to an 11-2 victory against Serra Catholic (20-3). It was the Rebels’ first championship since 1995.

Dan Boehme led the attack. He smacked five hits in five plate appearances. In hitting for the cycle, he socked a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning. In addition to his single and double, he tagged two triples.

Drew Lafferty helped himself at the plate. The freshman southpaw banged out four hits and drove in a run. Courtesy runner Michael Bigley scored three times for Lafferty.

SLS opens PIAA action June 3 against District 10 runner-up Lakeview.
